"Helping customers every inch of the way"

The story behind the inch tells a lot about what civilization went through to standardise things. King Edward II of England, in 1324, enacted a law that set the inch as "three grains of barley, dry and round, placed end to end, lengthwise".

Mathematics teacher Charles Butler, in 1814, tried to be a little more precise: "three grains of sound ripe barley being taken out the middle of the ear, well dried, and laid end to end in a row". Shortly after, the British Government conceded that the length of a single barley-corn could never be standardized and thus kept a standard inch in the Exchequer chamber as the legal definition of an inch to this day.

It was only after ISO 31 (later re-labelled ISO 80000) was formed in 1960 that the definite and more accurate metric system was developed as a world standard for measurements. A wide range of ISO standards exists for industry players to comply with, and when they are ISO certified, it testifies to the standard of their product and service quality on a global scale, making it possible for them to compete in the world arena.
